Thirty years ago Dr. Seth Wallerstein completed a dental residency at JFK Medical Center, Edison, New Jersey and he believed so strongly in their mission that he’s been supporting them with his talents ever since.

Dr. Seth Wallerstein was a 2010 inductee into The John P Stevens Hall of Honor, as a distinguished graduate in recognition of his volunteerism and varied activities in Edison, New Jersey.

“I did my residency and saw the need for access to care in New Jersey,” said Seth Wallerstein, D.M.D., F.A.G.D.,  who lives and practices in Edison.

Currently on staff at JFK Hospital, Dr. Wallerstein has served as past Residency Director and Department Chairman thereEarlier this year, he shared his thoughts with Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine:

“We’re fortunate here in Edison to have JFK hospital, which provides access to care for those who can’t afford it, through two residents and 40 volunteer dentists. JFK [furnishes] the space and the supplies. Dr. Michael Kleiman is currently chairman of the board of trustees at the hospital — I think he’s the only oral surgeon [in the country] who chairs a hospital board.”

Most recently, Dr. Wallerstein made an introduction between the Benco Family Foundation and a program through which JFK dental residents help educate children in need  about the benefits of oral health care.

While completing their residency at JFK, residents have the opportunity to rotate through other departments throughout the Medical Center, and complete community service rotations at Kiddie Keep Well Camp and nearby nursing homes.

Kiddie Keep Well Camp, according to its website, began as a Fresh Air Focused Camp in 1924, dedicated to providing summertime fun and enjoyment to the less privileged children of Middlesex County. It started with only 60 campers and a small staff consisting of a director, several volunteer counselors and a cook. The camp has grown to serve over 600 children and seniors each year and over 50,000 youth since its origin. Kiddie Keep Well is the only camp of its kind in New Jersey and one of the oldest in the nation.

On Fridays, during each visit to Kiddie Keep Well Camp, the dental residents provide free dental screenings for nearly 80 children as well as education and the donated dental supplies.
