To provide the best in dental technology, Smile Design Dentistry of Plymouth, Minnesota recently collaborated with Benco Dental on the design of a new sterilization lab.

The goal of Plymouth, Minnesota’s Smile Design Dentistry‘s sterilization lab project was to create a centerpiece for the office while updating the dental practices and types of equipment. It is now an area that stands out to patients as they are coming through for appointments, according to Dr. Moore.

Sterilization: The Why

Sterilization is the cornerstone of what the doctors do on a daily basis at Smile Design. Without a leading edge sterilization technique, it is not possible to safely deliver a high-caliber of dental care. From preventing the spread of common germs to blood borne pathogens, sterilization requires a daily commitment; the true benefactors of a state-of-the-art sterilization lab are the dental patients served.

The procedures performed in this dental office vary widely from basic dental cleaning to orthodontics, to fillings and crowns, and more invasive oral surgery. The dentists are able to quickly and effectively clean their instruments better than ever with the completion of this sterilization project.

Dedicated goals and impressive results

The doctors at Smile Design Dentistry — Brett Moore, DDS, Corey Jensen, DDS, MAGD, and Ali Mohebbi, DDS, DICOI — have a dedicated goal in all facets of dental care: Provide the very best to the patients they see.
This update replaced a lot of equipment to improve both the sterilization process and practices.

How did they do it?

• Adding two hydrims, or sterilization-specific instrument washers.
• Adding one autoclave for sterilizing instruments.
• Changing the flow of the sterilization area to align better with CDC best practices.
• Creating a view. Inviting patients to a better vantage point of the space, which included opening a wall to add a large glass pane (shown at top).

How long did it take?

Smile Design Dentistry started this project about seven months prior to the remodel with a visit to the CenterPoint Dallas, the Benco Design Showroom in Flower Mound, Texas guided by Sue Murphy and Jaime Smith.

According to Dr. Moore:
