“Historically, anything you wanted to do in life required age. Over the past 10 years something has changed, and you are right in the middle of it.”

Forbes Media Chief Content Officer Randall Lane addressed members of the dental profession assembled in New York seven days ago for the inaugural Next Gen Summit, among them, 34 of the Incisal Edge 40 Under 40, America’s best young dentists.

“What a time to be a dentist,” said Randall Lane.

“I get to spend every day on innovation and see what’s coming up….the exchange of ideas of young innovators is so important… You grew up as a digital native, it’s innate to you,” he added.

He speaks from experience.
During his tenure as editor of Forbes Magazine, Lane helped it reach its highest-ever U.S. readership (6.7 million) with new emphases on young innovators and disruptors.

As event keynote, Lane introduced a series of four panel discussions during day two of the NextGenSummit. Here at TheDailyFloss.com, you can expect a weekly recap of each of the Summit’s four topics, beginning next Thursday with “Setting Up a New Practice” featuring 40 Under 40 honoree Dr. Bradford Picot, Melissa Sprau, NCIDQ, LEED AP, and Dr. Tristan Hamilton.

Dental Care in a Carrot

Dr. Hamilton, who holds degrees in architecture and dentistry, not only shapes dental office designs across America, he changes lives through dentistry. During Day 3 of the Next Gen Summit adventure, Dr. Hamilton and Day of Smiles Giveback volunteers instructed second and third grade students at PS 125, The Ralph Bunche School. Their topic: Dental Care in a Carrot,  an oral health education program created alongside Lessons in a Lunchbox by Dr. Winifred Booker, the CEO and Director of Development at The Children’s Oral Health Institute.

At PS 125 in Harlem, Next Gen Summit volunteers received questions from the children on every topic, from the best way to floss to the amount of hours dentists work in a day. One dentist even received a comparison to Taylor Swift from an elementary student (Sorry Dr. Hamilton, you’re a rock star no doubt, but she was asking about  Dr. Lindsay Pfeffer, shown below).

Speaking of rock stars…

On Day One of the Summit, sponsored by Midmark, Hu-Friedy and KaVo Kerr Group, guests at the evening’s cocktail reception hosted at Kimpton Hotel Eventi received total star treatment.

In a this-can’t-be-anywhere but NYC display, paparazzi photos of attendees took on a just slightly larger-than-life format: a jumbotron-sized billboard in Manhattan (shown below).

Who would expect anything less from an experience spotlighting the  Incisal Edge 40 Under 40?
