Like many children of the late 80s, Dr. Kyle Stanley and his brother spent time glued to the TV.
Instead of watching Rugrats, DuckTales and Family Ties, though, they were tuned into stomach surgery episodes on PBS’ NOVA.
“I was always interested in medicine. Growing up we would sit and watch surgery shows. Now one is a paramedic, and me and my other brother are dentists,”
said the Beverly Hills general practitioner.
No stranger to the Big Apple
About a month earlier Dr. Stanley had visited New York for the Digital Smile Design Residency, and was still buzzing with exhilaration about the event.
“I was teaching with (Dr.) Christian Coachman. Attendees were from all over the world — 20 different countries. It was so cool to show projects I’ve been working on for the last eight years and see people be excited, interested and asking questions.”
Dr. Stanley maintains a private practice specializing in biomimetics, implants, and cosmetic dental procedures,
but that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this young wunderkind who will be among Top 10 Young Educators spotlighted in the fall edition of Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine.
“Some of the new techniques that I’m bringing in which are kind of fun involve plastic surgery in dentistry. I’ve introduced something called the lip lift that really no one’s been doing in dentistry,”
said Dr. Stanley.
“I also talk about implants and esthetics, but I think that no one’s ever done this before, so I’m trying to blaze a new trail with bringing two different specialties together.”
A gentleman and a scholar
For the remainder of 2017, he’ll educate dental students every week at the University of Southern California, but guest lectures will deliver him to four continents, all of which fulfill his aspirations to be “on top of the game,” none more than an early 2018 engagement: the 25th Anniversary Seattle Study Club Symposium in Palm Springs, California (January 15-20).
Dr. Stanley who has lectured for LMT Lab Day, Digital Smile Design, the International Esthetic Masters Congress, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, among others, attributes his success on this front to three mentors, a lifelong interest and a bit of luck.
“I always wanted to be on stage and try to be at the top of the game. I’ve been lucky to have really good mentors who I have just tried to emulate as much as possible. They’ve really helped me. I owe my whole career to my three mentors: Dr. Pascal Magne, Dr. Sascha Jovanovic, and Dr. Christian Coachman. Those three mentors have done everything for me,”
said Dr. Stanley, who serves on the clinical faculty of the Ostrow School of Dentistry and the Global Institute of Dental Education (gIDE) in Los Angeles.
“At the Seattle Study Club meeting coming up in January, the speakers there are the top in the world and somehow I got knocked in. The only way that happened was I had a son, and I couldn’t speak last year. They said, ‘You can come next year,’ which happens to be the 25th anniversary. I got super lucky,”
he joked.
But seriously, he’s an awesome dad
The new dad referred to his then four-month-old son, Valko, who he creatively manages to schedule time to enjoy.
“It makes it more challenging because I try to be home as much as possible. I did red-eye to get here and then I’ll fly back the same day so that I’m really only away from my family for less than 24 hours. I can still sleep in my bed tonight,”
he added.
A magna cum laude graduate from USC’s Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry in 2010, Dr. Stanley completed a dental implant specialty program and residency at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Florianopolis, Brazil in 2011.

He has also coauthored articles on esthetics, dental materials, dental implants, and surgery in QDT, Quintessence International, International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, and Inside Dentistry.
“I get a lot of personal and professional satisfaction from teaching. I can do a simple one-hour lecture of a case that I did four years ago and someone comes up to me and says it’s helping them. … I also really like teaching the younger students at USC. It’s a passion for me, because I can bridge the gap a little bit. I’ve been out (of school) for a little over seven years. It’s long enough to where I have some experience with clinical dentistry and with running a practice, but I’m not too far gone from being a student, so I still understand what they are going through.”
Clearly.
Wait, did we mention he was in a band!?
