Though not part of an average dental treatment, the discovery of a seed sprouting in a patient’s gum appears less unusual than other findings.

At least, that is, according to a recent report by MensHealth.com, in which dentists share examples of the unseemliness they’ve encountered during treatment.

One dentist discussed the aforementioned sprout:

“At the beginning of a root canal treatment, I started to clean out the root. Amongst the plaque and tartar, I found some sort of seed lodged in the gums, and there looked to be a tiny plant growing out of it. After asking the patient a few questions, I realized it was a tomato seed sprouting a plant,” Gary Glassman, D.D.S. told MensHealth.com

Regardless, realize that dentists deserve props for demonstrating fortitude and humanity in the face of out-of-the-ordinary oral health situations.
