In 2015, Alene D’Alesio, DMD, Program Director, Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, of UPMC, (shown) was the first to earn gold medal distinction in an Edison Awards dental category.

“Thomas Edison was an inspirational man who spoke routinely on preventive medicine.  I was honored to win an Edison Award for my invention, Lily Method, especially since it can help prevent long-term negative dental outcomes in children,” said Alene D’Alesio, DMD, Program Director, Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, of UPMC, and the first to earn gold medal distinction in an Edison Awards dental category.

Gold, Silver, and Bronze Winners are chosen as the “best of the best” by the world’s top senior business executives, academics, and innovation professionals. In 2015, the awards recognizing global innovation added a dental category, and since then, discoveries in oral health care and their creators have joined the ranks of previous winners, the Apple ipad, Keurig Vue® single cup brewing system, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“After winning the Edison Award, an article on the Lily Method was in Parents® Magazine and the product was also placed on the shelves at Babies “R” Us!  This entire experience has been incredible,” said Dr. D’Alesio regarding her pacifier weaning system.

Each spring, Incisal Edge, the leading lifestyle magazine for dental professionals, spotlights Edison Award nominees in the dental category, illustrating the year’s most innovative dental equipment, merchandise and technology. Earlier this year, Dave Ronto, DDS, inventor of the Multi-Action Spiral Suction, was among them. His dental solution, a suction device that doesn’t stick to patients’ cheeks, earned adulation and silver status at the April, 2016 Edison Award Ceremony.

“It was very humbling and quite an honor to be at the awards banquet with my family no less, amongst the brightest minds and talented business leaders and innovators in the world … truly amazing and honestly very motivating.  It’s great to have received such a large ‘pat on the back’,” said the Michigan practitioner.

Published by Benco Dental, Incisal Edge celebrates dentists’ achievements both inside the operatory and during their hard-earned downtime. To celebrate excellence in dental design, the magazine will profile Edison Award nominees in the magazine’s spring edition. For additional information regarding Incisal Edge magazine, visit: https://www.incisaledgemagazine.com/
