It’s no wonder that Dr. Daniel Coleman is among this year’s Incisal Edge magazine #40Under40, America’s Best Young Dentists. The Tufts University School of Dental Medicine alum somehow makes the multi-talented Justin Timberlake look like a slacker.

Rhode Island periodontist Dr. Coleman and his wife Shannon recently welcomed their first child — Laurel Grace Coleman — to their family in February of this year, he co-authored a book that was published this past winter,  and he innovated periodontal education through the design and production of a dental typodont model used for calculus detection.

Don’t take our word for it. Ask one of his students at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, where he serves as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Periodontology.

The aforementioned book “Non-Surgical Control of Periodontal Diseases”  is being picked up by a number of universities, including Tufts University in Boston, for the education of dental students.

“Springer, our publishing company, came to us three years ago looking for a text covering topics of non-surgical care due to the lack of contemporary published texts on the subject,” said Dr. Coleman. “What we have come up with is very accessible to readers, easy to open and reference quickly, and provides illustrations to bring the text to life.”

The handbook is designed for practicing dental clinicians and students (dental hygienists, general dentists, periodontists, and students of dental hygiene and dentistry) who are responsible for treating patients with a broad spectrum of periodontal diseases.

Among eight broad chapters, readers will gain insight into:

• the patient’s involvement in disease control and prevention,
• the clinician’s instrumentation for the diagnosis and basic treatment of gingivitis/periodontitis
• pharmacotherapeutics and supportive maintenance therapy to ensure long-term success. 

Dr. Daniel K. Coleman,  a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, earned his B.S. at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and his D.M.D., M.S., and Certificate in Periodontology from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Boston, MA.
