We’ve always viewed dentistry as an art form, but one Los Angeles filmmaker put a new face on that concept.

Earlier this year, Andrew Thomas Huang visited United Smiles of Kensington to create an apt cover of The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face using dental equipment for his instrumentation.

The artists shared his analysis on YouTube: “Always wanted to cover The Weeknd. Surprisingly the gloves made the most sounds!”

Huang, who studied Fine Art and Animation at the University of Southern California, graduating in 2007, has recently shown solo and collaborative work at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC; MoMA PS1; The Barbican Centre, London; The Museum of Contemporary Art, LA and the Saatchi and Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes Lions.

His “trademark motifs” described in an interview with filmmakermagazine.com as “bodies and nonphysical objects breaking down and reintegrating, inanimate objects from the natural world coming to life, a penchant for unnerving grotesquerie” would seem a natural fit in the dental practice environs. Fear not, this video’s contents do not include graphic dental imagery.

Collaborations, including projects with Icelandic musician Bjork, have earned acclaim. The Webby Awards,  the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, recognized Musical Core video with a Winner “People’s Voice” Webby Award in Music Category.
