“Modern form and function, in a horological context, can be tricky: For watchmakers, it’s a delicate task to blend contemporary materials with slightly futuristic designs that echo traditional timepieces just enough to make them appropriate for both a day in the practice and a night on the town.”

So says timepieces columnist Ariel Adams in the current edition of Incisal Edge dental lifestyle magazine. She examines a quartet of high-tech watches strike that balance nicely, evoking the best of aviation, racing, technology and even space flight.

First up, the Apple watch, shown.

The Bite: $399 and up The Basics: Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Apple didn’t invent the smartwatch, but per custom, it’s done it better than anyone else has been able to. Perhaps that’s because this first iteration was very much inspired by traditional watches, making it a useful digital tool that’s as carefully designed as the finest luxury timepiece. Whether it’ll one day be as ubiquitous as the iPhone is an open question, but dentists looking to be on the leading edge of wearable tech could hardly do better. apple.com
