The Academy for Sports Dentistry’s 33rd Annual Symposium, June 25-27 in Chicago launches with a Team Dentist course mediated by Dr. Stephen Mills, a pediatric dentist who is past president of the Academy for Sports Dentistry. The course will focus on issues related to being a dentist for a sports team, including details about the responsibilities of the role and tools required for it; dental trauma and concussion that can result from sports injuries and medications a team dentist can prescribe for athletes.

During the hands-on workshop, participants will also learn how to make a custom pressure laminated mouthguard, according to Dr. Jim Lovelace, ASD annual meeting chair, who has a general dentistry practice in Hinsdale, Ill.

“There’s no better place to go and hang out with a group of dentists that want to interact and exchange ideas on how to prevent dental trauma,” said Dr. Lovelace.

According to a story for the ADA News by Michelle Manchir, the symposium will also feature discussions and presentations with Dr. Russell Baer, team dentist for the Chicago Blackhawks, Dr. Chuck Bush-Joseph, team physician of the Chicago White Sox, and Dr. Peter Chemello, one of the members of the Chicago Bulls’ medical staff.

The meeting will convene at the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel in Chicago. A special group rate for hotel rooms is available for the meeting. For more details or to register, visit academyforsportsdentistry.org.
