Three hundred twenty-five dentists, 200 dental hygienists, 40 lab techs, 800 community volunteers, 36 hours nonstop, 2,150 patients served, $1, 070,000 in dental services rendered.

This overview from a 2011 event helped organizers prepare for the The North Carolina Mission of Mercy-Charlotte (NCMOM) hosted at the Charlotte Convention Center  just 6 days ago.

The primary mission of NCMOM-Charlotte is to provide complimentary dental services (without cost to the patient) for the adult underserved population of greater Charlotte-Mecklenburg on a first-come, first-served basis, per the successful formula of NCMOM (North Carolina Missions of Mercy). NCMOM, an affiliated program of the North Carolina Dental Society, offers this dental treatment to citizens statewide, who have few or no other options for care. Many in this fragile population have never seen a dentist and suffer the complications of advanced dental disease. NCMOM is staffed by caring volunteers from across the state, and is funded by tax deductible donations and through the kindness of select corporate sponsors.

Sponsors of the September 5 -6 event included Benco Dental, the largest privately owned, full-service distributor of dental supplies, dental equipment, dental consulting and equipment services in the United States.

Since its inception, the program is responsible for the delivery of dental services, without cost to the patient, for 50,000 deserving North Carolinians: A value of over $19,000,000.

NCMOM-Charlotte 2011 provided the NCMOM program with its first opportunity to serve the state’s largest urban population. In 2011 for the first time, the Director of North Carolina Missions of Mercy, Dr. Bill Blaylock, granted NCMOM-Charlotte’s request to uniquely work around the clock, without stoppage, from 6 a.m. on Friday, August 19 through 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 20. The same model was followed in 2012 and again this year.
